By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Philip Augustine Brogan and Private Harry Katz, United States Army, are cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded them. On the morning of 20 October 1918, in the Bois de Foret, while carrying out their hazardous duty of maintaining liaison within the battalion, the services of Privates Brogan and Katz as expert machine gunners were commandeered by Company B, 6th U.S. Engineers. As such they helped to capture and hold a very important position. Their courage and endurance in this engagement won for them the highest praise of the officers of the 6th U.S. Engineers under whom they served.
