    Headquarters, 3d Division, A.E.F., Citation Orders No. 22 (July 8, 1919)

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Creed Vanover, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the afternoon of 22 July 1918, in the woods west of Jaulgonne, France, Private Vanover and his squad were left near the edge of a wood while the Platoon Commander reconnoitered the lines. Machine guns opened fire unexpectedly at close range. Private Vanover feared that the men would be stampeded by this sudden burst of fire. He sprang to his feet in full view of the enemy, called upon the men to keep cool and get ready for action. His example of coolness and fighting spirit was an inspiration to his comrades.
