By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Charles Roswell Cough, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company C, 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the night of 2 October 1918, Private Cough was detailed to guide a ration party up to his company in the Bois de Beuge. On the way up the enemy opened a terrific bombardment, and the party was held up. But Private Cough went forward through the artillery fire and discovered another trail relatively safe. He then made his way back to the party, rushed it through the newly discovered trail and reached the company safely.
