By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private James Innerarity (ASN: 80686), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. Private Innerarity distinguished himself while serving with Company D, 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces. On the night of 23 October 1918, the Bois De Feret was under concentrated shell fire for some time. A shell struck the gun of Private Innerarity’s squad, mortally wounding two men, slightly wounding two others, and killing one. Private Innerarity was momentarily stunned and the gun disabled. Still under heavy shell fire and harassing machine gun fire, Private Innerarity aided all four men to a dressing station in a dug-out several hundred yards away, making four trips. He saw them safely attended to, and returned to repair his gun, remaining on duty in the position, still being shelled.
