    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Ira Sengewalt (ASN: 553773), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the nights of 26 – 27 July 1918, Corporal Sengewalt showed exceptional courage. He made three trips with messages from Company Post of Command ion le Charmel to Battalion Post of Command in the rear through a heavy barrage of gas and high explosive shells. Finally, even tough his eyes were nearly closed by gas burns, he carried his Company Commander through the barrage, again to the First Aid Station four hundred yards to the rear.
