By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal [then Private Fred F. Bury (ASN: 80624), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Le Rocq Ferme, Marne Sector, on 14 – 15 July 1918, in the midst of the barrage Corporal Bury left his machine gun emplacement, realizing that he faced almost sure death on ground churned by high explosives, to visit a wounded comrade. He exhibited absolute disregard of his own personal safety in again crossing and re-crossing the field, collecting poles and blankets to build a stretcher for the wounded, and with another member of his squad carried the wounded toward a nearby place of safety, immediately returning to his place of duty.
