By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Dean Armstrong (ASN: 553939), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company C, 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 16 October 1918, during a series of vicious attacks and counterattacks in the south edge of the Bois de Foret, Corporal Campbell courageously requested to be relieved of duty as Company Clerk in order to carry ammunition through fierce enemy fire. He reached the front and accomplished his mission, and instead of going back empty handed for more ammunition, he called upon a few men to help carry back the wounded in blankets.
