By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant James Scott Montgomery, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company C, 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the morning of 21 October 1918, on Hill No. 2998, Sergeant Montgomery was accompanying Lieutenant Leon R. Mead on a reconnaissance party through heavy shell fire. Lieutenant Mead fell severely wounded by a shell fragment and the party was held up by the ferocity of the enemy fire. Sergeant Montgomery crawled forward, pulled the wounded lieutenant across his back and carried him over the shell-swept field for nearly two kilometers to a First Aid Station. The sergeant then went back, took command of the platoon, and acquitted himself very creditably during the rest of the engagement.
