By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Clay C. Boles (ASN: 553512), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company A, 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, southwest of Les Evaux, on the night of 14 – 15 July 1918, Sergeant Boles commanded a machine gun section and though under heavy shell and machine gun fire showed a great devotion to duty and by his coolness and bravery inspired his section during a most trying time.

Boles (ASN: 553512), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company A, 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 23 July 1918, northeast of Charteves, France, Sergeant Boles selected the positions for his section under heavy shell and machine gun fire and though wounded so severely that his leg was later amputated, refused to be evacuated until his guns were in position. Sergeant Boles at all times proved to be a soldier of the finest type; brave, energetic and capable.
