By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) Edward H. Brown, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the woods east of Nesles, France, 14 – 15 July 1918, Lieutenant Brown displayed unusual courage and initiative in conducting his men to a more advantageous firing position through the intense bombardment that preceded the last German offensive. Progress was so difficult due to the darkness and fallen trees that it was necessary for Lieutenant Brown to remove his mask, though the woods were drenched with gas.
