At the age of sixteen William left Schenectady High School, entering the service the day war was declared. He went overseas in a Machine Gun Company of the 27th Division; remaining abroad until after the war. Returning to his home in Schenectady, he re-entered Schenectady High School from which he graduated in 1920. The same year he entered West Point, graduating with the Class of 1924. It was during his first year at the Academy that he received the Silver Star Citation for his heroism as an enlisted man during World War I.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private William Hill Lamberton, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Machine Gun Company, 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in France, during World War I. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private Lamberton, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
