By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) Dewitt S. Hose, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 7th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant Hose took command of his Company upon the wounding of his Company Commander, in the attack upon Bois Claires Chene and Hill 229 (Meuse-Argonne Sector), 20 – 24 October 1918. He showed splendid courage, leadership and calm judgment in the strenuous fighting in these woods. In the subsequent counterattack the resistance of the guns commanded by him checked the Germans, causing them great losses.
