By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private [then Sergeant] Charles C. Coder, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. Private Coder distinguished himself by conspicuous bravery in action while serving with Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 8 August 1918. After a violent counterattack by the enemy upon our positions on the Vesle River, which was repulsed, Sergeant Coder volunteered and led a patrol along the river bank to locate and take any of the enemy that remained on the south side of the river. After several hours of energetic work, he returned and reported the south bank of the river clear of the enemy.
