    Headquarters, 3d Division, A.E.F., Citation Orders No. 22 (July 8, 1919)

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private First Class Sounders P. Pretty (ASN: 549279), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the morning of 15 July 1918, acting as platoon agent to increase speed in delivering messages between gun positions, Private First Class Pretty exposed himself fearlessly and unhesitatingly to withering enemy machine gun and rifle fire. He volunteered for this work after one agent had been killed and another severely wounded. His work enabled the quick and accurate changing of our fire which at this time was crucial.
