By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private William Stedman, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private William Stedman and Robert R. Lewis exhibited great courage and coolness on or about 10 October 1918. They assisted in firing Stokes Mortars which had been placed in an exposed position. When the Infantry advanced they carried the gun forward and continued to operate it. For over three days they had few rations and no sleep. They were an example of self-sacrifice to the rest of the section.
