By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant John Dunbar (ASN: 549498), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Dunbar exhibited extraordinary bravery and leadership in action at Le Charmel, France, on 22 July 1918. Sergeant Dunbar was ordered to take a squad and establish liaison with a company supposed to be on our right. His party was suddenly fired upon by machine guns. Through his daring and leadership, one machine gun and two of the crew were captured.
