By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) Lefevre Pontalis, French Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 8th Battalion Chasseurs (French) attached to the 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant Pontalis displayed conspicuous gallantry during the battle of 22 – 23 July 1918, near Jaulgonne and Charteves, France. Lieutenant Pontalis accompanied his Regimental Commander to various parts of the field, where the latter’s presence was necessary, regardless of his own personal safety, setting a splendid example of courage and spirit to the officers and men of the command.
