By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Walter E. Nagelin, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company D, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 14 June 1918, he was a member of the first patrol of this Division to cross the Marne. This patrol opened the way for other patrols to gain necessary information as to the enemy’s dispositions, and proved of great value. The north bank of the Marne was held by the Germans, yet this patrol succeeded in crossing the river in boats, accomplished its mission of reconnaissance and returned without casualties, thereby rendering most valuable service.
