By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Wagoner Ely B. McDaniel (ASN: 2175827), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Supply Company, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the Marne Offensive, Wagoner McDaniel voluntarily offered his services to drive a wagon load of ammunition from Charteves, through Jaulgonne to the front positions of the 2d Battalion. This undertaking was successfully carried through, despite the heavy German artillery fire that developed. The risk which this soldier ran was known to be exceedingly heavy as the road between the two places was under constant direct fire of the enemy.
