By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Howard Reick, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Reick distinguished himself by exceptional heroism at Crezancy, France, 15 July 1918. After the town had been evacuated owing to intense bombardment, Sergeant Reick, then assistant wagon-master, entered Crezancy to feed and water animals which had been left there. He continued this work twice daily and also succeeded in bringing many of the animals safely out of the town. This he did in spite of the fact that the enemy commanded a clear view of the town.
