By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Claude Lytle, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company I, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Lytle distinguished himself on the night of 25 October 1918, when he led a patrol of fifteen men into the town of Brieulles, France, occupied it and maintained his position until reinforcement arrived. He repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire in order to hold his company in hand by his coolness and courage, aiding greatly in the advance.
