By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Sergeant Charles L. Campbell (ASN: 544792), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Supply Company, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the morning of 15 July 1915, First Sergeant Campbell convoyed a wagon train of rations that were sorely needed, across the Aviation field, and into the Bois d’Aigremont, during a very heavy bombardment by the Germans. In the Meuse-Argonne offensive he made nightly trips, convoying wagon trains to the front line, carrying rations and ammunition over roads that were at all times objects of Germany artillery bombardment.
