    Headquarters, 3d Division, A.E.F., Citation Orders No. 22 (July 8, 1919)

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Regimental Supply Sergeant Harry Herzfeld (ASN: 544795), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Supply Company, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the Meuse-Argonne offensive Sergeant Herzfeld almost nightly convoyed wagon trains of rations to the front line over roads that were at all times objects of German artillery bombardment. On the night of 27 October 1918, he carried through two wagon loads of rations, although warned that his way led through gas so dense that he ran a great risk in the undertaking. Arrived at his destination, he found that the details for the rations had been ordered not to leave their protection as the bombardment at that spot was too heavy to warrant the risk that had to be taken. Making a voluntary reconnaissance, he located the troops and later delivered to them the rations.
