By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain [then First Lieutenant] Craig Cochrane, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Captain Cochrane gave proof of unhesitating devotion and energy during the offensive operations on 7 and 27 October 1918, and on many occasions displayed brilliant leadership of his Company in assaulting and presiding over captured positions disregarding all danger. Time after time when reduced to utter exhaustion by lack of food, water, and sleep he adhered to his post of duty practically subsisting upon nerve and courage.
