By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain William Earl Boyce, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While attached to the 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 25 July 1918, six Medical Corps men of Captain Boyce’s command went to establish a first aid station at Le Charmel, France, and were lost behind German lines. He went alone in search of them, slipped through the enemy’s lines into Le Charmel, and reconnoitered from the second story of a building. While unable to rescue his men, he located the position of three German machine guns and retiring battery and returned with the information to Major Sylvester, 2d Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment.
