By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain William Earl Boyce, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While attached to the 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 15 July 1918, Captain Boyce fearlessly disregarded the most terrific barrage since the battle of Verdun, in his search for wounded on the battlefield of the 30th Infantry at the 2d Battle of the Marne, and at great risk to his own life, succeeded in saving the lives of many wounded officers and men. Without a gas mask, because he could not work with it on, he went everywhere doing more than his duty.
