While attached to the 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 15 July 1918, Captain Boyce fearlessly disregarded the most terrific barrage since the battle of Verdun, in his search for wounded on the battlefield of the 30th Infantry at the 2d Battle of the Marne, and at great risk to his own life, succeeded in saving the lives of many wounded officers and men. Without a gas mask, because he could not work with it on, he went everywhere doing more than his duty.

While attached to the 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 25 July 1918, six Medical Corps men of Captain Boyce’s command went to establish a first aid station at Le Charmel, France, and were lost behind German lines. He went alone in search of them, slipped through the enemy’s lines into Le Charmel, and reconnoitered from the second story of a building. While unable to rescue his men, he located the position of three German machine guns and retiring battery and returned with the information to Major Sylvester, 2d Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment.
