    Headquarters, 3d Division, A.E.F., Citation Orders No. 22 (July 8, 1919)

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Lon D. Melton (ASN: 1598324), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fossoy, France, on the night of 14 – 15 July 1918, Private Melton was acting in the capacity of Company Runner. On many occasions it seemed certain death for him to go out but not once did he hesitate in delivering his messages. During the time when not engaged in carrying messages he made a search for the wounded and administered first aid to them. His bravery and calmness under shell fire was an inspiration to all who saw him.
