By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Abraham Gottenfried (ASN: 541047), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company C, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 22 July 1918, during the attack on the La Tieulerie Farm, France, after finding himself cut off and surrounded by a party of about twelve Germans, Private Gottenfried was called upon to surrender which he refused to do, answering them with the fire of his Chauchat rifle. He scattered the party, killing three before he, himself, was killed. His example was one of extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty.
