By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Jesse E. Gordan (ASN: 2044472), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company E 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, while his Company was in action against the enemy on 18 October 1918, Private Gordan displayed such disregard for danger as to be an inspiration to all his comrades. He volunteered to carry a message through heavy machine gun and artillery fire which he succeeded in doing and upon returning was killed while in the act of delivering his reply.
