By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Erarnest W. Flynn (ASN: 540901), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving as Company Runner with Company B 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, throughout the Aisne-Marne Offensive from 18 to 29 July 1918, Private Flynn carried messages through heavily bombarded and machinegunned areas with total disregard for personal safety, and showed initiative and great presence of mind in maintaining connection between Posts of Command, when same were moved several times during his absence. This soldier’s willingness to volunteer for any duty at any time, and the judgment shown in the accomplishing of his mission were an inspiration to all that knew him.
