By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Harlan Leon Doty (ASN: 2395399), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the Machine Gun Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on Cunel Heights, France, from 10 to 21 October 1918, after two runners had been put out of action in an attempt to deliver a message, willingly volunteered and delivered the message to his commanding officer. On Hill 299, near Cunel, France, 23 to 31 October 1918, he displayed extraordinary coolness and bravery under fire at all times thus raising the morale of all with whom he came in contact.
