By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Lyre R. Brown (ASN: 244469), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company C, 5th Signal Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the night of 12 – 15 July 1918, near Fossoy, France, Private Brown worked fearlessly and without regard for personal safety under heavy artillery and machine gun fire in repairing telephone lines in forward areas. He further patrolled these lines continuously during the night in order to maintain communication.
