By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Emory W. Whitney (ASN: 540021), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Headquarters Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Le Rocq Farm, France, on the night of 14 – 15 July 1918, Sergeant Whitney showed devotion to duty in excess of that required of him by volunteering and carrying important messages through terrific shell fire and gas bombardment between regimental and brigade Posts of Command, all other lines of communication having been broken. Later the same day Sergeant Whitney rendered further important service when he volunteered to conduct a detail carrying ammunition to the front lines across an area that was constantly under the enemy’s bombardment. At his own request he remained at the front until the regiment crossed the river.
