By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Harold Soper (ASN: 540979), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company B, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 25 July 1918, Sergeant Soper displayed great bravery and coolness and ability in handling his squad during an attack on the village near Le Charmel, France. He kept his squad together under heavy artillery and machine gun fire, and when separated from the remainder of his company and in great danger of his life, he continued the advance and systematic search of the town, reporting back to his Commander when the occupation was completed.
