By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant George B. Gunther (ASN: 542175), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company H, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the Meuse-Argonne offensive near Cierges, France, on 6 October 1918, Sergeant Gunther displayed extraordinary heroism and initiative in assuming command of his platoon, leading them forward into battle, and assisting in the leading and in the tactical deployment of his company, all of his officers having been killed or disabled. He was constantly in front of his company during the attack 4 – 20 October 1918, and by his fearless and courageous example inspired his men to supreme efforts.
