By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Levi Cato (ASN: 540421), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the Machine Gun Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fossoy, France, on 15 July 1918, all the gun crew having been put out of action by the enemy’s artillery fire, Sergeant Cato himself fired the gun into the ranks of the approaching enemy and thereby contributed toward holding up the attack. He was found at his post severely wounded on the evening of 16 July 1918, and refused to go to the rear until ordered to do so by an officer, thereby displaying extraordinary courage and setting a splendid example to the remainder of the company.
