By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Infantry) William C. Brown, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the morning of 12 October 1918, at Cunel Heights, France, Lieutenant Brown moved forward with his platoon and took a line of trenches under heavy artillery, machine gun and rifle fire, forming for a counterattack. He immediately returned, notified his company commander and held his guns in readiness. In the area allotted to his platoon he repelled a counter attack of two enemy infantry companies and enabled the capture of one hundred and sixty of the enemy during the remaining three hours of the morning. Lieutenant Brown set a splendid example of courage and coolness at a critical time to the officers and men with him.
