By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Paisley, United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 21 June 1918, the 1st Battalion of the 7th Infantry Regiment was ordered to attack a strong German position in the Bois de Belleau. Lieutenant Paisley in leading his platoon against a machine gun nest, was met by Germans in American uniforms who attempted to give orders and confuse his men. He killed one officer and several men and continued to lead his men against the fortified positions. This officer’s action on this occasion was conspicuously daring. Later in the day he was hit by a 37-mm. shell and was instantly killed.
