    Headquarters, 3d Division, A.E.F., Citation Orders No. 22 (July 8, 1919)

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) Edwin W. Gray, United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the morning of 15 July 1918, at Fossoy, after an intense artillery preparation of four hours duration, the enemy having attacked his platoon positions in greatly superior numbers, Lieutenant Gray exhibited the highest type of leadership and personal heroism, inspiring his men to the most stubborn resistance. When his right flank was threatened by another and larger party of the enemy he did further lead a combat patrol in that direction to establish connection with the adjoining units of the Division and is believed to have been killed in the performance of this task.
