By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Citation to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Robert G. James, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving as Commanding Officer of Company G, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Captain James showed great courage, initiative and absolute disregard of personal safety in organizing the various platoons of his company which had been caught, in the process of relief, by an intense enemy artillery, in the preparation. Later he succeeded in leading his company through the bombardment around an exploding ammunition wagon to the support trenches about one kilometer away.
