By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Charles E. Sullivan (ASN: 2354284), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company A, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces during a counterattack on the positions held by his company on 13 October 1918 in the Bois de Foret, and after the machine gunners supporting the line had all been killed or wounded, Corporal Sullivan worked a machine gun himself, until relieved by members of a machine gun battalion sent up as reinforcements, thus materially helping to resist the counterattack and causing severe loss to the enemy.
