    Headquarters, 3d Division, A.E.F., Citation Orders No. 22 (July 8, 1919)

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private C. J. Grives, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the Military Police Detachment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Grives did on 15 July 1918, with great devotion to duty and utter disregard for his personal safety, without orders from his superior officer, assist in bringing in French and American soldiers on the streets of Courboin while this place was being heavily bombarded by the enemy, and did thus expose himself to great danger. He was also knocked down three times by shells before he succeeded in ringing the church bell, which was the alarm for gas.
