By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Frederick B. Kompass, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. Lieutenant Kompass, 38th Infantry Regiment, on duty with Headquarters, 6th Infantry Brigade, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces as Liaison Officer to the 32nd Division, showed exceptionally meritorious service during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, 1 to 27 October 1918. He made numerous trips to the front line in the face of heavy machine gun and artillery fire, and by his devotion to duty, with utter disregard for his personal safety, he succeeded in maintaining liaison at all times.
