    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Charles Mandalino, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 111th Infantry, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in France. On the morning of 12 August 1918, immediately north of Fismette, Second Lieutenant Edward F. Fitzgerald, Sergeant John S. Miller, Privates Charles Mandalino, Herbert Taylor, John L. Binkley, Floyd Marbaugh and George Milliron occupied shell holes on the extreme left of the Company’s position, and under heavy artillery barrage, machine gun and automatic rifle fire held this position against heavy enemy attacks until reinforcements arrived, saving the bridgehead and preventing troops north of the Vesle River being captured or destroyed. In the performance of the above duty Private Herbert Taylor was killed and Private John L. Binkley injured.
