Private Sage distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Battery F, 6th Field Artillery, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action during the operations connected with the capture and defense of Cantigny, France, 27 to 31 May 1918. Private Roy Sage along with Private Earl Arnold displayed great gallantry and courage in working for twelve hours during the night of 27-28 May 1918 in laying telephone lines to the infantry; three times the wire gave out, necessitating their return for more wire in order to continue the work; they completed the lines after day-break, working under terrific shell fire and gas bombardment.
