By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant First Class Carl G. Thoethe, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Sergeant First Class Thoethe distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action during the operations connected with the capture and defense of Cantigny, France, 27 to 31 May 1918. Sergeant First Class Thoethe although twice wounded at the opening of the attack, insisted upon going over with his section and remained with it for five hours under heavy shelling and machine gun fire until the section was withdrawn. During this time he worked cheerfully and efficiently and by his bravery and coolness set a splendid example to the men working under him; without having received first aid he went forward again with his company to repel an infantry attack where he displayed great heroism until killed by machine gun fire.
