By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Lawrence Reynolds, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Sergeant Reynolds distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company C, Machine-Gun Battalion, 1st Brigade, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action 8 May 1918. Sergeant Reynolds during a violent bombardment of machine gun positions at Bois Cantigny, four shells exploded near a machine gun emplacement manned by a squad under his command, killing three men and wounding one. He behaved with great coolness and efficiency in this trying situation, although his position was under constant shellfire, caring for the wounded men and ascertaining whether there was any possibility of saving the lives of others.
