By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant George S. Shephard, United States Army (Reserve), is cited by the Commanding General, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. First Lieutenant Shephard distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 18th Infantry, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action during World War I. Lieutenant Shephard led a patrol into the enemy’s position as far as the second trench lines, obtaining valuable information; unable to reach its own line before daylight the patrol took shelter in a shell hole and after a time boldly walked across No Man’s Land to its own trenches.
