Harold Shoemaker became a World War I ACE, credited with shooting down 5 enemy aircraft while serving with the Royal Air Force, before transferring to the U.S. Army Air Service late in the war. He was killed on October 23, 1918, when he collided in the air with another SE-5 piloted by Lieutenant Glenn D. Wicks.
