Harold Kullberg was rejected for service with the U.S. Army Air Service, and subsequently enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps. Seeing action with the Royal Air Force during World War I, he tied Captain Wilfred Beaver as the RAF’s second-ranking American ACE, credited with 19 aerial victories (18 airplanes and 1 balloon.) He died in an air crash on August 5, 1924.

    Captain Harold Albert Kullberg, Royal Air Force, was awarded the British Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism during World War I. This officer has destroyed six enemy aeroplanes and has taken part in seven engagements when others have been destroyed by members of his patrol. He is a bold and keen officer who possesses a fine fighting spirit.
